History of PULADA:

In 1948, the security of Malaya (now known as Malaysia) was threatened by a communist insurgency. The British who governed Malaya then discovered that they needed a training centre to train their forces in jungle warfare before being tasked for operations in the jungle against the insurgents. In view  of this, a training centre called “Far East Training Centre” was established in Tampoi, Johor.

In 1951, this training institution was moved to Ulu Tiram (present location) and was renamed as Far East Land Forces (FARELF) Training Centre.

When Gen Sir Gerald Templer took over Command as Director of Operations of Malaya in 1952, he renamed FARELF Training Centre to what then known as “Jungle Warfare School”. The centre was used to train Commonwealth forces in gettimg acclimastised to the weather and enviroment to fight the communist terrorists. Soon afte, the jungle Warfare School became a branch of the School of Infantry, Warminster, United Kingdom. During the peak of the emergency (1948-1960), there were as many as 35 infantry battalions conducting training at this centre annually. It was also prerequisite then for every infantry battalion to undergo retraining at this centre prior to deployment for operations in parts of the country.
